As of July 31 childbirth services will no longer be part of Wilkes Barre General Hospital. In a release from the hospital yesterday, the reason cited by Commonwealth Health, was a decrease in deliveries over the past 7 years and fewer for this year are expected. Staff currently working in the obstetrics unit and clinics may apply for other open positions at the facility. Hospital officials say they are working with local obstetricians to transition patients to other facilities in the area.
