HARRISBURG, PA — PennDOT is urging Pennsylvania drivers to use extreme caution as the shortening days and onset of late fall and winter bring a sharp increase in deer activity on roadways.

The warning comes as officials highlight that over 6,000 deer-related crashes were reported across the state last year, often occurring in unexpected places due to changing seasons and habitat disruption. Deer are most active between sunset and sunrise, making morning and evening commutes especially high-risk.

"This time of year calls for extra caution," a PennDOT official stated, stressing that drivers should be alert, slow down, and remain vigilant for deer appearing in suburban and even interstate areas.

In the event of a collision with a deer, officials advise drivers to:

-Remain Calm and ensure the vehicle is safe to drive.

-Document the Damage by taking photos for the insurance company.

-Report the Incident to the police or PennDOT if the deer remains a hazard in the roadway.

-Contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission if a resident intends to claim and take the deer carcass.

The caution is particularly timely, as the fall season is the deer's breeding season, increasing their mobility and boldness as they travel greater distances.
