A potential deal between two major television station owners could impact the local broadcast landscape in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Nexstar Media Group — which owns WBRE and operates WYOU, the NBC and CBS affiliates in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton — is in advanced discussions to acquire rival broadcaster Tegna, the owner of WNEP, the region’s ABC affiliate.
However, FCC regulations effectively prohibit mergers between any two of the “big four” broadcast television networks — ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC — creating uncertainty over how such a deal could proceed.
Officials from both Nexstar and Tegna declined to comment on the report.
