MOOSIC, PA — A major identity shift is on the horizon for Northeastern Pennsylvania's Triple-A baseball franchise, as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders announced plans to change their team name ahead of the upcoming season.
The "RailRiders" moniker has represented the local Triple-A affiliate for the past 13 years, serving as a tribute to the region’s rich railroad and electric trolley heritage.
The upcoming change marks the fourth major chapter in the franchise's name history since arriving in Lackawanna County:
- 1989–2006: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (Philadelphia Phillies affiliate)
- 2007–2012: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (New York Yankees affiliate)
- 2013–Present: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees affiliate)
Team leadership indicated that the new name and visual branding will shift focus toward celebrating the region's natural beauty, local culture, and outdoor legacy.
The franchise plans to formally unveil the new team name, primary logo, and updated branding during an event in November.
