Lackawanna County officials confirmed that West Nile virus has been detected in two new mosquito samples, marking the third local detection of the virus this summer.

The positive samples were collected on July 13 at two separate locations, including the intersection of Oak Street and 1st Street in Taylor and along the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail at the Laurel Street trailhead in Archbald. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officially notified county officials of the positive test results on July 17.

County officials emphasized that there have been no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Lackawanna County so far this year. Environmental officials will continue monitoring vector activity and managing local mosquito populations to reduce the potential risk to residents.
