It was quite the way to wrap up the 2020 regular season on Sunday in Orchard Park.
With a chance to clinch the No. 2 seed in the AFC Playoffs with a win, Buffalo completely dominated the Miami Dolphins in a 56-26 victory at Bills Stadium. On top of that, the Bills finished the 2020 campaign with a 13-3 record (ties a franchise record), and also finished the year with a perfect 6-0 record against the AFC for the first time in franchise history.
While many believed that the starters would not get much playing time in the final game of the regular season, players like quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs ended up playing through the first half and setting franchise marks along the way.
Allen added to his MVP-caliber season on Sunday with 224 passing yards, which put his total passing yards for the season at 4,544. That was good enough to break the Bills' single-season franchise record, which was set back in 2002 by Drew Bledsoe.
As for Diggs, he added seven receptions for 76 yards to his season totals, which put him in the league lead in both receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535) to end the year. Not only was Diggs' 127 receptions the sixth-most catches in a single season in NFL history, but he becomes the first Bills receiver in franchise history to lead the NFL in both receptions and receiving yards.
The win for Buffalo also knocked Miami out of playoff contention after the Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns all earned victories on Sunday.
With the No. 2 seed sealed for the playoffs, Buffalo will host, at least, two home playoff games this January, if they happen to advance to the Divisional Round.
Up first, though, the Bills will have to deal with the Colts in the first game of Wild Card Weekend in the NFL on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST at Bills Stadium.
The Colts come into Saturday's matchup coming off a Week 17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars to finish the 2020 season with an 11-5 record, their best mark since the 2014 season.
Indianapolis ended the most recent campaign as the 10th-best offense in the NFL, averaging 378.1 yards per-game. While Philip Rivers may be one of the most veteran quarterbacks in the NFL, he helped the Colts to the 11th-best passing game in the league, while the run game also ranked-11th in the league led by rookie running back Jonathan Taylor.
As for the defense, the eighth-best unit in the league (averaging 332.1 yards-against per-game) will be tested against Allen and the Buffalo offense, who finished 2020 as the second-ranked offense, averaging 396.4 yards per-game. While the Colts defend the run well (second-ranked), the pass defense (20th-ranked) will have to try and defend Allen and the potent Buffalo passing attack.
Saturday's game will be the first time since the 2018 season when these two teams squared off. In that game, Buffalo was dominated by quarterback Andrew Luck in a 37-5 loss at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Bills were forced to turn to Derek Anderson at quarterback in the loss after rookie Josh Allen was unavailable to play with an elbow injury.
Buffalo's last win over the Colts came back in the 2017 season in the famous "Snow Bowl" in Orchard Park, where the Bills earned a 13-7 overtime win to inch their way closer to snapping their 17-year playoff drought a few weeks later.
However, this will be the first time ever that the Bills and Colts will face one another in the AFC Playoffs.
Over the past few weeks, Howard Simon has been confident in Buffalo's ability to make a deep run in the AFC Playoffs, but has been hesitant on the Bills beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game on the road.
However, this week was a much different story.
Howard believes that the Bills are currently the hottest team in the NFL heading into the postseason, and they will continue to ride that momentum into the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs. He not only picked the Bills (for the first time ever) to beat the Chiefs to earn a trip to Super Bowl LV, but Howard did the unthinkable by picking the Bills to beat the Green Bay Packers in Tampa Bay, Florida to win the team's first-ever Super Bowl!
As you can expect, the overall reaction from "Bills Mafia" was one of jubilation and joy.
