(WTIC-AM) -- A proposal from Connecticut's two senators would create new federal requirements for the safe storage of firearms.

The bill would also create penalties for failing to store a gun properly.

The proposal is supported by a Guilford woman whose son died after accidentally shooting himself in the head.

Kristin Song says since her son died, people have told her many times that they can't even imagine what is is like to have gone through what she has been through.

"Imagine that your loved one is shot," Kristin Song said. "And as they are choking on their blood, being rushed to the hospital, the EMT's are working heroically, but they know it is in vain.

"You pray that your loved one did not died in pain, afraid or alone," Kristin Song said. "You race to the hospital.  The ER doctor whispers to you that your loved one is gone, and your world shatters into a million tiny pieces."

Investigators say 15-year-old Ethan Song and another boy had repeatedly taken the handgun out of a box in a bedroom closet where it was stored.

The other boy was charged with manslaughter.

The guns owner was not charged with any crime.
