CROMWELL, Conn. (WTIC) - Cromwell's Superintendent of schools and Assistant Superintendent resigned today amid allegations of a romantic relationship between them.

There had been an anonymous allegation that the two had a romantic relationship, but an investigation could not confirm that. School officials, however, indicated they had lost confidence in the administrators.

In a statement, the town's Board of Education said new information came to light, and that the board could no longer support the continued employment of John Maloney and Krista Karch.

A law firm's report dated today found that the two had contacted each other while one of them was still on leave, even though they had been told not to communicate with fellow employees.

The investigation found that the two school leaders were together at a restaurant while one of them was still on leave, even though they had been told not to communicate with fellow employees, including each other while on leave.

The report said when investigators asked the two school officials about whether they were together at a restaurant, they initially lied about it.

Investigators said the incident called into question how honest the two had been during the law firm's review of the situation.

Some workers said the situation in the school district improved while the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent were on leave, away from the office.
