MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz visited food distribution sites in Middletown and Meriden Tuesday that are providing breakfast and lunch meals for families amid coronavirus school closures.

The state approved 89 school districts to serve meals at more than 353 "Grab & Go" sites across the state, according to Bysiewicz.

Tuesday morning, she visited the site at MacDonough School in Middletown which served over 170 meals the first day it opened on Monday. With nearly 80 meals given out in just the first hour Tuesday, school officials say the numbers are growing.

MacDonough School Principal Damian Reardon says the elementary school is also preparing for at-home learning for their students by providing homework packets, lesson plans and Chromebooks.

Bysiewicz says she and Governor Ned Lamont are working with Education Commissioner Dr. Miguel Cardona to develop a plan for online learning.

Reardon says efforts are being made to provide after-school activities for students at home as well.

For example, he says the director of their "Kid's Corner" program through YMCA will be going live on Facebook every day to read a chapter of "The Wizard of Oz" to students.

The site at MacDonough is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
