MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Connecticut State Police are conducting DUI checkpoints and roving patrols this holiday season, starting Friday, December 20 through January 1, 2020.

State Police commanding officer Colonel Stavros Mellekas says, "While on patrol, Troopers will focus on distracted driving and those who may be operating under the influence. Please, be our partners in safety by following state laws on the road."

With Christmas and New Year's approaching, many residents will be driving for family visits or last-minute shopping trips. According to State Troopers, thousands will be taking the highway, so it's important that drivers follow traffic laws to prevent collisions and injuries.

Troopers remind drivers to drive the speed limit, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you, ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts and signal when turning, changing lanes or taking an exit.

Avoiding distractions will also lead to safe road ways, police say. Troopers ask drivers to refrain from using your phone while driving, never consume alcoholic beverages or drugs, including those legally prescribed, before you get behind the wheel and reduce the speed whenever there are emergency vehicles occupying a lane.

When it comes to a road trip, State Police urge drivers to plan ahead by filling up the gas tank prior to the trip, checking windshield wipers as well as tire pressure, carrying winter blankets, drinking water and snacks and checking traffic and weather conditions before leaving.

"Weather conditions can change at any time during the winter. We ask you to please heed any weather precautions prior to leaving for your destination," Mellekas says, "The safety of yourself, your family and others on the road should remain your top priority."

Police also suggest keeping a shovel and sand or salt in the trunk of your vehicle.
