(Hartford, Conn WTIC)-Quinnipiac University Journalism Professor Richard Hanley says the closing of the Hartford Courant's newsroom on Broad Street is an historic moment. But he adds the paper is" on death's door". The paper's owner has announced the newsroom will be closing at the end of this month. No alternate site for the operation has been announced.
Hanley says the decomposition of the industry continues." It means there wont' be a central place for journalists to gather, talk, share notes, trade story ideas, laughs and where ideas are exchanged and characters are noticed."
Hanley says the fact that the owners think the building is worth more than the news operation is tragic. "I can't see it surviving unless changes occur with a re-branded identity and work toward community and solutions journalism. The Courant will never be the same. That goes without saying.
Hanley blames poor management. "not just now but for years, ignoring the internet. and failing to maintain relevance. All they did was cut jobs, cut jobs, cut jobs. "
Hanley says at one point the newspaper featured three-hundred reporters. He says that has been reduced to around 40.
