Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - Democratic state senate President Martin Looney, a fixture at the capitol for 46 years, has announced he'll not seek reelection.

The veteran lawmaker who represents New Haven and Hamden, began is legislative career in the House before moving on to the upper chamber, first as majority leader and later senate president.


State House Speaker Matt Ritter called Looney a "giant of the General Assembly."

Governor Lamont said Looney has been a "steadied, principled voice for working families...who made a lasting impact on Connecticut."

Looney has tapped Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff of Norwalk to be his successor.
