Black ice this morning led to a number of vehicle crashes in the greater Hartford area along Interstates 84 and 91, as well as Route 20 in Windsor Locks.

There was a multi-vehicle crash on I-91 northbound by exit 27 in Hartford.

State police say it's important, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours, to be extra vigilant if the road or highway looks wet.

Trooper First Class Sarah Salerno said that means reducing speeds and keeping a safe distance in back of the vehicle in front.

In addition, drivers must remove snow and ice from their vehicle before heading out.

"In windy conditions or driving on the highway, that's (snow and ice) going to blow off your vehicle and potentially blind somebody in the area around you", Salerno said.

The fine can be $125 if a driver is stopped with ice and snow on their car.
