Westport, Conn./WTIC Radio - Police in Westport say there has been an increase in the number of bobcat sightings in town.
They're putting the word out to residents, particularly dog owners, to be extra aware.
While bobcats tend to shy away from people and focus on prey such as chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits, they could post a threat to small dogs, according to police.
In a statement, the Westport Police Department advises residents that while bobcats generally retreat from dogs, they could lash out if cornered.
On another front, animal control officials in town say coyote pups have been spotted in some yards.
The canines don't pose an immediate threat and will also tend to avoid humans as they get older.
Police advise owners to keep their pets indoors for a few hours if they happen to spot bobcats of coyotes.
