It's times like these that scammers come out of the woodwork and play on emotions.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection says there are several resources at consumers disposal--the Better Business Bureau, Charity Navigator and Guide Star to name a few.

They should also verify that a charity is properly registered with the DCP.

Other things to look out for: unsolicited phone calls, pressure to give immediately without doing any research and an incentive offer for a donation that sounds too good to be true.

Also, lookout for those wanting donations via prepaid card or wire transfer that aren't traceable.

And if you think you've been had, contact the department at dcpcomplaints@ct.gov.
