Numbers from the state Department of Labor show the jobless rate fell by two-tenths of a percentage point 4.2%.

Unemployment weekly filings did increase slightly to 17,000 due to seasonal layoffs.

DOL says employers added an estimated 1,600 jobs for the period.

The department did revise its job gains for April down slightly from 1,600 to 1,400.

DOL Director of Research Patrick Flaherty said seven in 10 sectors saw gains.

The largest gains were in private education with 1,300 jobs added, followed by restaurants and hotels with 1,000 and technical and scientific services with 700.

Flaherty says although economic recoveries tend to be uneven, it's still a solid jobs report.

Labor Department officials say 86% jobs lost due to the pandemic have recovered.
