The long Christmas holiday weekend saw state police investigate four fatal crashes.
They occurred in Franklin, Westport, Middletown, and Salisbury, where Avery Nelson, 23, of Norfolk, was killed after the vehicle he was in swerved off route 44 around 3 Christmas afternoon. The vehicle hit a tree, and Nelson was declared dead at the scene.
The driver, Samuel Simmons, 20, of Canaan, was taken to the hospital with reported serious injuries.
State police say they responded to 259 motor vehicle crashes between midnight Friday through Christmas night.
29 citation were issued for DUI, 237 for speeding, and there were 7 seatbelt violations.
202 motorists were cited for other moving violations, such as following too closely, and failure to move over.
In all, state police responded to more than 3700 service calls over the holiday.
