Hartford, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - When it comes to the extension of the Governor's emergency pandemic powers, why can't he just announce them like the previous six or look at them as regular bills and deal with them accordingly, questioned Senate Minority leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford).

A public hearing is being held Tuesday on the emergency pandemic powers, but the cutoff to register is 3 p.m. Monday.

This "doesn't give them enough time to testify with Administration, Commissioners and the well-connected taking up most of the time. They're also not putting it before the committee of cognizance that actually has knowledge and information about dealing with these issues," Kelly said.

The virtual public hearing eliminates 25 percent of the population that lack access, Kelly also pointed out.

"It's a quarter of the population most affected by Covid... still struggling to get back where they were two years ago. It's important that the government hear that voice," he said.

Both Democrats and Republicans have offered sales tax cut proposals.

According to Kelly, the Republican proposal offers immediate tax relief. The Democrats' plan, Kelly said, is a tax credit.

"You pay the government, file a tax return, claim the credit and the government will give you the money back," Kelly said. He argues struggling families need the money now.

Kelly was a guest on the WTIC morning show.
