Large numbers of voters expected at Connecticut polls

Voting at JFK Elementary School in Windsor

WINDSOR, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The first person in line to vote Tuesday morning at JFK Elementary School in Windsor got there at around 4 a.m. Two hours later, when the polls opened, the line was snaked around the building and into the parking lot.

While there have been historic numbers of people casting absentee ballots because of the coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of thousands of Connecticut voters are still expected to vote in person on Tuesday.

Many are motivated by the contentious presidential election. Former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden is expected to win the state’s seven electoral votes, and state Democrats hope his support, coupled with opposition to Republican President Donald Trump, will benefit congressional and legislative candidates down the ballot. But Republicans, who point out there’s still strong support for Trump in parts of the state, believe the Democrats could be too optimistic.

Voters who lined up early Tuesday in Windsor expressed no health reservations about voting in person during the pandemic. Many said they wanted to make certain their vote was counted and didn't want to leave anything to chance.
