Motel guests trapped due to Henri flood waters

Vernon break in fence
Crews start to undo the break in a fence to allow guests to leave the Motel 6 in Vernon.
Town of Vernon Fire Department

VERNON, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ The Vernon Fire Department says it was able to rescue guests at the Motel 6 in Vernon who were stranded by flood waters Sunday evening.

As Tropical Storm Henri dumped heavy rains across the state Sunday afternoon, the Hockanum River over ran its banks, Fire Officials said. It flooded the access road and bridge across the river that connects the Motel 6 to the Hartford Turnpike, trapping people.

Multiple guests were gathered outside the hotel calling for help and wanted to leave but were trapped.

Two cars tried to drive through the water and were disabled.

Fire crews opened a break in a fence between the Motel 6 and I-84. Once opened, it serves as a gate for emergency personnel.

Brush had to be cut in order for the "gate" to be opened and for cars to drive through. Once it was open, carloads of motel guests who were looking to leave were able to exit via I-84, with help from Connecticut State Police.

Vernon's fire chief, Stephen Eppler, told WTIC News some people decided to shelter in place. The "gate" was secured and will be re-opened, if an emergency situation warrants it. Otherwise, officials believe the river's water levels will lower, allowing for regular traffic.
