NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The Newtown community is coming together to mourn the death of an assistant fire chief who was killed in a Monday evening crash.
Newtown Police say the crash happened around 6:16 p.m. Monday in the area of Route 6 (Church Hill Road) and Dayton Street.
A Toyota Tacoma struck Peter Blomberg, 72, of Newtown, who served as the assistant fire chief of the Botsford Fire Rescue.
Blomberg was transported to Danbury Hospital where he later died.
Blomberg's death on Monday came only hours after the funeral and burial of Wethersfield Volunteer Firefighter Robert Sharkevich, Sr., who was killed in a UTV crash while responding to the Hawthorne brush fire at the Berlin-Meriden line.
“Devastating and tragic news," is the reaction from State Senator Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield). His district includes Newtown.
Hwang goes on to say, in a written statement: "Newtown and all of its volunteer fire stations and members mourns this horrible loss."
The crash remains under investigation.
