Norwich, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-Norwich will spend the day digging out from Saturday's Nor'easter that dumped 22 inches on the city, leaving downtown streets narrow to navigate, said Mayor Peter Nystrom.

"There's a major effort downtown because of the volume of snow that has fallen. You just can't push it to the side. You have to extract it, load it into trucks and haul it out of here. That's a process that will be going on all day. It was yesterday, it was happening then as well," he said.

As for navigating city streets, Nystrom said," Downtown we have some issues here, because of our narrow streets and systems for traveling through. So, people will find some inconvenience down there during the day."

Nystrom said crews worked all weekend, taking seven-to-eight-hour breaks. Norwich has 162 miles of road, some hilly and one-way.

Schools closed today and Nystrom expects them to re-open tomorrow.

"I'm sure there are some public works crews assigned to them with their large parking lots and things like that. That's what we do. Our public works crews plow. For example, all the volunteer firefighters and central fire departments throughout the storm. Part of their assignment was to keep those parking lot areas clear. In case you needed fire service, they can get out."
