The conditions of two workers critically injured in a partial building collapse in New Haven had improved by Friday evening.

Yale New Haven Hospital says it has eight patients-- one in serious condition, seven in fair condition.

The incident happened at about 12:30 pm Friday in an apartment building under construction near Yale University, at 188 Lafayette Street.

According to city officials, part of one floor fell onto another as workers poured concrete. New Haven Fire Chief John Alston says three people were partially buried. He explains that a quick rescue effort played a key role.

Three dozen people were at the construction site at the time, officials said, and all have been accounted for.

"One of the problems that you have with wet concrete is having to do the searches before it hardens," says Alston, "so, the accountability count was important, so we were able to communicate with the foreperson here to make sure that they had accountability for their folks."

A stop work order has been issued at the site and OSHA is investigating.
