NEW HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Investigators have classified the cause of the fire that burned down a historic New Hartford building this summer as undetermined as they move to close the case.

The New Hartford House on the town's Main Street went up in flames on August 10, resulting in what investigators call "catastrophic" damage that made it difficult to determine the origin of the fire.

In conjunction with the New Hartford Fire Marshal's office, the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit examined the scene of the fire, which left the entire back half of the building destroyed, and interviewed numerous witnesses.

The investigative team was unable to identify the source that caused the fire due to the catastrophic damage, authorities said.

However, investigators said they believe the fire started at the rear exterior of the building and spread throughout the structure.

With the cause as undetermined, investigators said the case will be closed.

The team also extended sympathies to the loved ones of fallen Burlington Firefighter Collin McFadden who died after suffering a medical emergency while fighting the fire.
