STORRS, Conn. (AP and WTIC) - A power outage forced the University of Connecticut to cancel Monday classes at its main campus in Storrs, university officials announced.

The officials said in an email to students and staff that all Storrs-based classes before noon would be canceled because several academic and residential buildings were without power.

Around noon Monday, officials announced that classes were canceled for the remainder of the day due to ongoing repairs. Non-essential employees were directed to complete the work day remotely, officials said.

"The outage has been traced to a problem involving an underground high-voltage line on campus," UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in a written statement. "No injuries or traffic impacts are reported, but it’s a lengthier and more complex repair than what would be necessary in a typical outage."

Academic buildings, residence halls, and offices that lack electricity were transitioned to a different circuit throughout the day, she said, and students on campus were directed to dining halls with electricity.

UConn's regional campuses in Hartford, Stamford, Waterbury and Avery Point were not affected by the outage, university officials said. The law school and medical school were also unaffected.

Gampel Pavilion did not lose power, and Monday night's NCAA women's basketball tournament second-round matchup between UConn and the University of Central Florida was expected to take place as scheduled, the university said.
