HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Surrounded by state and local officials, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced that Connecticut voters have until October 26 at midnight to register to vote by absentee ballot.

You still have time to visit your local town hall and fill out the application, Merrill said. Then, either hand it to the town clerk or drop it in the ballot drop boxes, she added.

The time to request an absentee ballot by mail has nearly evaporated, Merrill said, because of the time it takes to complete the process.

Nearly 660,000 residents voted by absentee ballots in 2020.

Connecticut also allows people to register the day they vote. The local elections take place on November 2.

Merrill, Governor Ned Lamont, Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin and Windham State Senator Mae Flexer all extolled the virtue of voting in local elections.

Tom Swann, Executive Director of the Connecticut Citizens Action Group, told a personal story. His town of Coventry has two Little League fields for boys, but none for girls, he explained.

"Fifty years after Title Nine, we should be ensuring girls have equal access to boys. My family will be out there organizing between now and Election Day to make sure that happens," he said.
