HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - State Representative Maryam Khan (D-Hartford, Windsor) speaks out against the attack on her following a Muslim prayer service last week in Hartford.
Rep. Khan, the State's first Muslim lawmaker, says she was taking photos outside the service at the XL Center with her children and friends when a man became uncomfortably close to her.
While trying to get away from the suspect - identified as Andrey Desmond, 30 of New Britain - Rep. Khan alleges Desmond attempted to kiss her. She pulled away but he wouldn't leave her alone, she describes.
After Desmond allegedly put her in a chokehold, Rep. Khan remembers thinking that she was "...no longer going to fight..." because she thought she was "...going to die."
Speaking during a press conference at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, Rep. Khan demanded a Department of Justice investigation into the Hartford Police Department, which she criticizes for responding slowly to screams for help and not having enough security at the event initially.
WTIC News/Talk 1080 has requested comment from the Hartford Police Department.
