Norwalk, Conn./WTIC Radio - The founder and namesake of the Stew Leonard's grocery store chain has died.

Stew Leonard, Sr. was 93.


A statement from the Norwalk-based chain says Leonard died Wednesday after brief illness.

Leonard got his start working at his family's dairy business in Norwalk.

Stew Leonard's opened its first store in 1969 selling eight items.

The business has grown to include seven stores in all in Connecticut and New York State.

Leonard spent time in prison in the early 1990s for income tax fraud.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marianne, four children, including son Stew Jr., 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.
