That freak October snowstorm came months after the state was blasted by the fury of Tropical Storm Irene, plunging over 800,000 power customers into darkness.

It was something WTIC meteorologist Bob Cox said doesn't happen very often around here.

Cox said while snow had been known to fall in October, a foot or more had never recorded that early in the season.

About 830,000 lost electricity during the snowstorm, some for more than a week.

Cox said the snow was of a wet and sticky consistency, helping to bring down trees, limbs, and electrical wires.

Another factor, said Cox, was the temperature.

He said it was mainly uniform between the clouds and ground--in the low 30s, thus inhibiting any melting.
