HARTFORD, CONN(WTIC Radio)--The Lamont administration and other organizations are urging residents in the greater Hartford area to
participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, as the deadline to file state and federal taxes is Tuesday.
Volunteers offer the program for free for those earning less than $60,000, those with disabilities, the elderly and those who don't speak English as their first language.
The tax preparers are trained by the Internal Revenue Service.
Officials said ten thousand residents so far in the greater Hartford have participated.
Congressman John Larson said 70-percent are eligible to participate, but only 5 percent take advantage of the program.
Lt. Governor Susan Bysciewicz said the Lamont Administration is interested in raising the Income Earned Tax Credit from 30.5 to 40 percent.
