WATERBURY, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ Waterbury Public Schools say all of its students will shift to virtual learning starting immediately on Tuesday.

The decision Monday night comes amid sharply increasing case and hospitalization numbers in Waterbury and elsewhere in the state.

Under the plan, students will begin virtual learning starting on Tuesday, November 17. Hybrid learning is expected to return on Tuesday, January 19. All students will follow their typical daily start and end times, Monday-Friday. Staff will continue to report to their respective buildings.

Students who have been learning in-person will have an opportunity to retrieve their belongings from their school building between Wednesday, November 18 and Tuesday, November 24.

The school says that if internet connectivity is a challenge, Comcast has donated pre-paid vouchers for internet service and/or hotspots as part of its Internet Essentials Program. More than 2,000 vouchers are still available.

Superintendent of Schools Verna Ruffin says laptops and tablets are available for students in need.
