WEST HARTFORD, CONN (WTIC Radio)-The town of West Hartford has been awarded a $700 thousand grant to help reduce serious and fatal car crashes.
The money will be used in conjunction with the town's Vision Zero Action plan. That pilot program is being used to target key areas where the accidents occur, whether on roads, walkways and bike paths.
Last year the town recorded six fatal car crashes and several other serious ones.
The effort includes using cameras and other data-driven, scientific evidence.
Mayor Shari Cantor said the biggest problem is speeding.
The entire state received $1.7 million, but West Hartford's grant is the largest.
The money will also go to hire an additional police officer for traffic enforcement.
