The Patriots didn’t only lose a game on Sunday, but they also lost two wide receivers in DeVante Parker (head) and Kendrick Bourne (knee) to injury.

To make matters worse, it was reported that Bourne tore his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. A tough blow to the receiver who was in the midst of a career campaign.

New England, sitting at 2-6 just eight weeks into the season, will now have to rely on young pass catchers Tyquan Thornton, Kayshon Boutte, and Demario Douglas to help carry the load on offense.

Quarterback Mac Jones spoke to this on WEEI’s Jones and Mego with Arcand show on Monday, and expressed confidence in the group while saying he’s looking forward to building towards the future with them as well.

“Really want them to take advantage of the opportunity,” the quarterback professed. “I’ve seen [Kayshon] Boutte play, you know in college, and worked with him early in training camp and in the first game and stuff, and I have a lot of confidence in him. Same thing with Tyquan [Thornton]. Tyquan, he’s from Florida, I’ve seen him play in high school, I’ve seen him play in college, and I’ve been really impressed with what he’s done in the NFL. He just needs an opportunity and I know he’s going to take advantage of it. And I believe in a lot of those guys and, like I said, I want to hrow with the young players, like Pop [Douglas], and everybody and grow with then and see what we can do to kind of build for the future too.”

Jones was then asked about the challenges of getting into a rhythm with inexperienced players:

“These guys, they all work hard,” he explained. “They’re all ready, I know they’re ready. It's just getting the little details ironed out, when you have a new guy in there you might not be able to do, ‘Hey I’m gonna signal you this play,’ or whatever, right? So it’s just a little bit of a learning curve, right? I was a rookie, everybody was a rookie at one point. You just have to work with them. Their ability is definitely there. A lot of the young guys have stepped up in games. Offense, defense, and special teams. I know that they can do it, for sure.”

Jones also spoke about the loss of Kendrick Bourne, the upcoming trade deadline, and more on Monday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
