ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - Officials in Macomb County are investigating after 33 dogs were rescued from cages inside a garage at a cemetery in Roseville.

Police responded to the property, at the corner of Little Mack and Masonic, on Saturday after getting a complaint from a passerby who saw the animals and was concerned about their welfare.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 33 dogs being housed in various types of cages. The officers determined the dogs needed immediate attention, as there were concerns about health and sanitary conditions. An officer from Macomb County Animal Control arrived and agreed with the officers, and arrangements were made with other rescue groups to remove the animals. Their current conditions are unknown.

A 51-year-old woman who lives in a home adjacent to the garage told police that she was running a rescue organization in Oakland County and unexpectedly had to move the dogs out of the facility. She was apparently planning to keep the dogs in the garage temporarily while some other type of location was secured.

Police aren't sure if the woman's original rescue was a licensed facility, but there is no indication she applied for a license in Roseville to operate a rescue. The dogs were in the garage for a few days, according to police.

An investigation is ongoing.
