Attempted Carjacking, Foiled By Good Samaritans, Caught On Video

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police are asking for the public's help in identifying and locating a suspect wanted for an attempted carjacking that took place near Campus Martius Park in Downtown Detroit on Friday.

Police released surveillance video of a 58-year-old woman getting into her parked car outside the Citizen's Bank in the 700 block of Woodward Avenue. Just as she was getting inside her car, a man ran up behind her and attempted to steal the vehicle, yelling for her to move into the passenger seat.

The citizen is seen going inside the passenger door and presumably trying to pull the woman to safety as the suspect tries to drag her out of the car.

Two more bystanders saw the struggle and came to the victim's aid, running across Michigan Avenue. Upon their arrival, the suspect shoved the person who first tried to help into the open passenger door, knocking them to the ground. They were able to chase the suspect away from the car.

Police did not say whether any injuries were sustained during the incident.

Police say the suspect fled the scene on foot, heading north on Woodward, though the video showed him heading west on Michigan.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, approximately 6'0" and 200 lbs. He was wearing a plaid, gray and black coat with a black hat.

Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or knows of his whereabouts, or otherwise has information about the incident, to contact the Detroit Police Department's CATS Unit at 313-596-2555, or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800- SPEAK-UP.
