DETROIT (WWJ) - An estimated 18 people were injured, according to authorities, in a crash involving a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus on the city's east side.

Deputy Detroit Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said a U-Haul truck rear-ended the bus, Tuesday afternoon, at Whittier and Somerset, in the area of I-94 and Cadieux.

He said that while most or all of the 18 injured people would be taken to the hospital, it does not appear at this time that any of the injuries were serious.

Police, fire and EMS remain on the scene.

"At this point we're preparing the patients for transport," Fornell told WWJ's Sandra McNeill, shortly after 3 p.m. "But like I said, it doesn't appear that anyone is in serious, and certainly not life-threatening condition."

Reports say some of those injured were children, although Fornell could not confirm any ages or other details at this time.

"I don't know how hard they hit them; and luckily it was a rear-end," Fornell added. "So typically you're going to have neck injuries and that type of things. But, again, our people are out there treating the folks now."
