DETROIT (WWJ) -- Buddy's Pizza is adding yet another location, and this time, the famous Detroit style pizza chain is expanding to downtown Detroit.
Buddy's confirmed Tuesday they will be adding a location inside the Madison building in Grand Circus Park, along Broadway and Witherell, just a block east of Woodward Avenue.
Buddy's on Broadway will be the chain's 14th location, after the company recently announced a location will soon be opening in Grand Rapids. The downtown location is expected to open by the fall, with officials saying they hope to be open before the Thanksgiving Day parade.
Buddy's first opened in the 1930s at the corner of 6 Mile Road and Conant Street as a "blind pig" establishment, "skirting the State and Federal laws that governed the on-site sale and usage of alcohol," according to the Buddy's website.
Since then, 11 other locations have opened across southeast Michigan. Fans of the "original Detroit style pizza," as the chain bills itself, have long awaited a downtown Detroit location.
The new location will be in the site of the former Angelina Italian Bistro inside the Madison. The former bistro featured space for 200 seats and had an outdoor patio along Broadway.
The Madison, owned by Dan Gilbert's Bedrock, is a mixed-use building for retail, office and event space. The coffee shop Ashe Supply Co. is also in the first floor of the building.
A.J. Nichols, co-owner of the coffee shop, says he's looking forward to a new face on the block.
"It's kind of a new experience for our block to have something different and pizza's kind of new to this mix, so I think it will help bring a little different clientele to the block and diversify things a little bit," Nichols told WWJ's Stephanie Davis.
