ROMULUS (WWJ) - The engines are running again with jets once again taking flight after a 14-hour shutdown at Detroit Metro Airport.
According to the FAA, operations at DTW in Romulus started to resume around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Flights are expected to continue to be delayed until schedules can return to normal.
The airport was completely shut down around 8 p.m. Tuesday due to icy conditions. Airport officials said rain was diluting the de-icing compound, causing it to be ineffective. The shutdown stranded travelers, with dozens of incoming and outgoing flights canceled or delayed.
"Weather conditions have improved enough to allow the deicing fluid to be effective," airport officials said in a statement, posting in an early afternoon update: "All four primary runways are now open at #DTW. Thanks to our hard working crews and all our partners! We appreciate our customers' patience."
Those who are planning to fly out of DTW or to pick up anyone scheduled to fly in are urged to check with individual airlines to confirm delays, cancellations and any other changes.
There were also major delays due to weather Tuesday at General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, Boston, MA (BOS), and at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, IL (ORD) where hundreds of flights were canceled.
