Detroit Police Kill Man Wielding 32-Inch Sword

Detroit police shot and killed a man wielding a sword

(WWJ) Detroit police say a man wielding a 32-inch sword and a dagger was shot and killed by officers on Detroit's west side at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

The man initially drew police attention by swinging his sword as he strolled in a neighborhood near Meyers and Grand River. "He was swinging it very wildly," Police Chief James Craig said.

After he was approached, he allegedly refused to put down his sword and eventually threw a dagger at police. The cop was hit below his right eye.

He was shot when he refused to stop advancing with the sword, police said.

Craig said the man was initially Tasered by police but he was wearing some kind of protective hockey gear so was unaffected by the blast.

At some point, the man -- described as in his 20s -- managed to get inside the patrol car, and a Good Samaritan boxed him in. "I commend (the motorist)," the chief said. "It was a very risky situation, but he saw our officers were in danger and wanted to assist."

This marks the fourth officer-involved shooting in three weeks.
