(WWJ) Details are emerging about a fake university set up be the feds here in metro Detroit -- aiming to catch people committing education fraud.
The University of Farmington along Northwestern Highway just south of 13 Mile Road doesn't exist.
But according to the Detroit Free Press, eight people have been charged with enrolling more than 600 immigrants in the non-existent institution. The sting was set up by the Department of Homeland Security back in 2015.
The federal indictment says the scheme was meant to help foreign citizens stay in the U.S. illegally by helping them pose as students.
The website says of the university: "Located in the heart of the automotive and advanced manufacturing center of Southeast Michigan, the University of Farmington provides students from throughout the world a unique educational experience. Our dynamic business administration and STEM curriculum allows students to rapidly apply their knowledge; preparing them to succeed in an ever-globalizing economy."
But it was actually staffed with undercover agents working with the Department of Homeland Security.
To maintain a student F-1 visa, someone has to be enrolled in a college and maintain progress toward a degree; If they're not in school, they have to vacate the U.S. within 60 days.
