DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to figure out what caused an explosion at a titanium plant on Detroit's east side.

The fire and explosion happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday at Global Titanium on Filer Avenue, near 7 Mile Road and Mt. Elliott Street.

At least two buildings suffered heavy damage; walls at one storage facility on the site are blown out.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said the smell of burning metal was overwhelming.

Three people were taken to the hospital -- a 27-year-old man for nausea, a 45-year-old man with back and leg injuries, and a 46-year-old man with burns on his hands. All are expected to recover.

"A HAZMAT situation was declared and it was cleared," he said. "Right now we have the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, we have Detroit Building Safety Engineering and Environmental Department on scene doing their reports and they've both reported to me that there are no effects or impacts that are negative to the community but there are some cleanup issues that need to be taken care of."

A cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
