Feds Find 1,000 Pounds Of Illicit Pot On Semi From Canada Hidden In Boxes As Office Furniture

(WWJ) Federal agents have seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana from a semi truck headed from Canada into Michigan. 

Customs and Border Protection agents found the pot stored in in vacuum sealed packages concealed in cardboard boxes and loaded on to wooden pallets in the truck that was supposed to carrying office furniture across the Blue Water Bridge Monday. 


The feds say despite travel restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, they are seeing a significant increase in drugs being brought across the border. 

"Even during a pandemic, traffickers continue to attempt to exploit our borders and will stop at nothing to try and introduce illicit drugs into our communities," said Port Director Michael Fox, who oversees operations at the Port Huron Area Port of Entry. "Our officers remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting our borders from all types of criminal activity."

 The Detroit Field Office, which covers all ports of entry throughout Michigan has seen a significant increase in narcotics seized since essential travel restrictions were enacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Since March, customs officials have seized more than 4,400 pounds of marijuana at border crossings.  

While marijuana is legal is Michigan, it must be sold and distributed by licensed sources.
