(WWJ) A female off-duty Detroit police officer was reportedly shot to death Sunday night at a home in Garden City.

Police are calling it a domestic incident.

Garden City police say the shooting happened about 11:45 p.m. at a home on Belton near Cherry Hill Road. The officer -- identified as Sgt. Elaine Williams -- was found dead inside the home.

A second person, who was found with a gunshot wound outside the home, was taken to the hospital. That person's condition is unknown.

Neighbor Vera Miller told WWJ's Charlie Langton that she heard the shots.

"We would wave in passing, it was reassuring to know that we had a police officer who lived on the block. We liked it. We saw her little boys going up and down the street on their bikes and her husband, or boyfriend or whatever, would drive his Mustang up and down. That was about it," she said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig addressed the media Monday afternoon, saying he met with more than 60 of Williams' colleagues in the department after learning the news.

"There was not a dry eye in the room," Craig said. "She touched everyone. She also touched a community. She was a neighborhood police officer supervisor; the community loved her."

Craig said Williams, who worked in the Major Crimes Unit, "just did a phenomenal job."

"She certainly is a tremendous loss, but her legacy certainly will live on," Craig said.
