TAYLOR (WWJ/AP) - A gun rights advocacy group is offering free firearm and personal protection lessons to women in metro Detroit.
Legally Armed In Detroit says registration starts Sunday for the May 19 lesson, which will be available to 900 women. The lesson includes a safety briefing, use of a firearm, ammunition and range time at Top Gun Shooting Sports Gun Range in Taylor.
No prior firearms training or experience is required. Women experienced with firearms also can attend to improve marksmanship skills. This event is open to women ages 12 and older. Anyone under 18 will need onsite approval and attendance by a parent or legal guardian to participant.
Firearms trainer Rick Ector says many women are curious about firearms and their role in self-defense, but are reluctant to investigate due to fears.
"If giving women a free lesson by a credentialed professional translates into women just trying it, it'll be a productive use of my time," he said in a statement.
Ector said the number of women participating in the event has grown from 50 in the first session to about 700 last year. This is the eighth year the lesson is being offered.
The event will take place in four sessions -- at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
