No one knows for sure, but a New Year's Eve show of fire on Warwick Street on Detroit's northwest side is drawing attention.
Dozens of people stand on a front lawn opening fire into the sky. The mood is jubilant.
Video of the gunshots made the rounds on social media, where many critizied the tradition of firing to bring in the new year.
"This is trifling as hell," one man wrote on Instagram.
Detroit Police say the people who opened fire are gang members, some of whom are on parole. Police Chief James Craig added that investigators have recovered more than 200 shell casings and will use technology to try to find those responsible.
No one was injured in this incident, though nine people were shot in Detroit on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, including one who was killed. In another incident of gunfire over the New Year's holiday, a stray bullet pierced the windshield of an unoccupied EMS rig.
