(WWJ) A 63-year old Detroit man has died Wednesday in an early morning crash.

Michigan State Police said the driver lost control of his SUV on the ramp from the Southfield Freeway to eastbound I-96.

The Chevy Tahoe went down an embankment through the local lanes of I-96 and crashed into a wall.  The local lanes were closed for hours for the investigation, reopening at 8 a.m.

The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, and the driver crossed from the ramp from N/B or S/B M-39 to E/B I-96 Express lanes.

"Somehow he crossed the embankment ... It was a very bad crash," WWJ's Charlie Langton said live on WWJ.

The freeway has since reopened to traffic. The man's name was not immediately released.
