(WWJ) Martell Murchison, 10, said he was handed a firework and a lighter by a teenage neighbor on his way home late on the Fourth of July.
His mother, Da'Sonya Murchison, 29, said when it didn't spark, Martell tried to light it again.
"Before I could throw it, it went off," he told the Lansing State Journal.
The explosion blasted off all five of his fingers, effectively taking his left hand. It was amputated.
"Looking up and seeing my son screaming and running to me holding what was once a normal hand now blown into unrecognizable pieces made my heart drop it felt like my soul was snatched from my body, " his mother wrote on Go Fund Me. "We were all in a panic and disbelief. After long deliberation the surgeons agreed that amputating what was left was the best option. "
His mother said he's adjusting to a new reality, and hoping to get a prosthetic hand with help from Go Fund Me donations.
His family has already garnered $8,200 on the fundraising site. They're seeking $13,000.
"Spending those restless nights in ICU and hearing him speak of never being able to do some of his favorite activities again like play sports and video games broke me," his mother wrote. "My son just wants to have a normal childhood again. With that being said I am asking for any donations that I can get to give my son a new hand and help him feel whole again. I thank everyone for the prayers and the donations that are yet to come."
