WARREN (WWJ) - A 24-year-old man is facing several charges including murder in connection with a drag racing incident in Warren that left a woman dead.

The man is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death and drag racing. His name is being withheld pending arraignment.

The incident happened last November along southbound Mound Road. Prosecutors allege that the suspect was driving a 2017 yellow Dodge Challenger and racing a white Dodge Challenger in the lane beside him. The white vehicle proceeded to stop at the red light at 9 Mile and Mound roads, while the suspect sped through the intersection and slammed into a blue Dodge Dart.

The driver of the Dart died two weeks later, succumbing to injuries she sustained in the crash.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim during this difficult time," Prosecutor Eric Smith said in a statement. "This preventable tragedy came at the hands of the suspect, who blew through a red light, traveling at speeds exceeding 75 mph. The defendant's actions were clearly a willful disregard of the safety of other drivers' lives."

If convicted as charged, the suspect faces up to life in prison.
