(WWJ) What does a community do to come together after a devastating loss that's a flashpoint for all the fear and sadness they're facing during a pandemic? In the case of Detroit, a memorial fund and a massive show of support have been launched to support the family of Michigan's youngest COVID-19 victim.
Little Skylar Herbert, 5, with a mile-wide smile, died Sunday after spending two weeks on a ventilator following testing positive for the coronavirus in March.
Donation's to the Skylar Herbert Fund can be made through Chemical Bank and the Detroit Public Safety Foundation website. Herbert's dad is an 18-year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department while her mother has been with the Detroit Police Department for 25 years.
They told their devastating story to the Detroit News about a little girl who came down with a headache and basically never opened her eyes again. Especially baffling, no one else in Herbert's family ever tested positive for coronavirus.
Also, The Detroit Police and Fire Departments are holding a Ride For Skylar to support the 5-year old's family after her death from the coronavirus.
This is a show of support for the Herbert family. No public vehicles will be allowed in the procession
The procession begins at 5 p.m. at Outer Drive and Santa Maria and ends at Outer Drive and Faust near Livini Park.
For those who want to donate to the family in her memory, contributions should be made payable to the Skylar Herbert Memorial Fund through Chemical Bank, 333 W. Fort Street, Suite 100, Detroit, MI 48226.
Donations also can be made through the Detroit Public Safety Foundation website HERE.
