HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WWJ) -- Paczki Day is Tuesday and many metro Detroiters were out in Hamtramck Monday to get ahead of the rush.

Even a day before the Fat Tuesday crowd is set to wipe bakeries clean of the Polish treats, lines were out the door at New Palace Bakery along Joseph Campau Street.

Marlene Szczodrowski of Warren, a Paczki pro making a return visit, told WWJ's Jon Hewett she was there to get a special two-filling-or three-filling treat.

"I do not do the prune," Szczodrowski was sure to add.

On the other end of the spectrum was Davon Conaway of Detroit, who made an impromptu stop at the bakery to beat Tuesday's rush.

“Today is the best day because we won’t be able to get in here tomorrow," he told Hewett.

Conaway says he is not concerned with the calorie count.

Paczki Day is celebrated in coincidence with Mardi Gras to mark the final day before Lent, in which many Christians fast or give up certain foods and luxuries until Easter Sunday.

Celebrations at bakeries, restaurants and bars will take place all across the city on Tuesday, including a bar crawl, a paczki 5K and a paczki eating contest.
